Radio, Radio

The first radio interview with Richard Armitage that I ever heard was Radio1 with Scott Mills, 2010, and it’s still one of my favorites. Richard seems so relaxed in this one, playful and funny, and speaking in an unhindered accent that I find particularly enjoyable.

It starts out with the hosts offering Richard some Fanta bread. I’m not sure if this was bread made with Fanta orange soda or just dipped in it, but Richard was a good sport and tried it…then he spat it out. It was “rank” and he just couldn’t bear it.

Lucas, hand to mouth
I’ve got my spine, I’ve got my Orange Crush

Then Richard lowers his voice, in a way that should come with a warning label, and utters the word “DIRTY *gulp* This segues into asking about Richard’s lady fans (of course). He takes the lighthearted, humble approach and claims he only has two. When asked what the age range of his fans are, he jokes that one is 25 and the other is 35…which is met with silence. His dry delivery was perfect.

talk slowly, so they’ll understand

When recalling a job as a dancing banana, we hear some of that accent that I love so much. Especially when he says “That’s not on your sheet” and “Find the pictures for that one!

Porter taking hostage gif
you’re going to “lose” those pics, understand?

The conversation switches to Guy of Gisborne and how girls always seem to like the bad boy. The female co-host enlightens the men on why that is: “they think they’ll be nasty to everyone apart from them, and just them they’ll protect.” Smart woman.

make me feel special, Guy!

Richard then says that Guy does have a “redeeming quality” under all of that leather. Listen, then tell me your mind didn’t go straight to where mine did…

Lucas, bang on coffee table
oh good! now we’re all on the same page.

The talk turns to Strike Back next, which is what Richard is mainly promoting in this interview. They talk of the training regimen and how Richard needs to watch his diet, etc. For those stalkers out there, he apparently drinks Soy Lattes.

finger pointing
forget you read that!

When they’re talking about the risk the production company took with centering a big budget show around one character, the way Richard says “just me” is adorable.

smirk, outside studio

As they move on into discussing the ad campaign and how the billboards are so massive, one fan says she sees Richard’s face every morning when she opens her bedroom window. Richard responds with, “gettin’ into her bedroom window, NICE!

remind you of anyone?

As talk turns to Lucas, an interesting point is brought up: what does Lucas do in his down time, what are his hobbies? The hosts suggest stamp collecting or a love of model railways.

close-up, serious Lucas
Double O gauge all the way, baby!

The interview wraps up with Richard lamenting that Robin Hood could have gone on for five series, instead of just three, and then he says “wicked” a few times. This interview just makes me smile every time I hear it!

less maniacal, more blissful (yes, that’s me)

I love the audio interviews, I even have a few different ones downloaded to my mp3 player. When I hit “random” to listen to music, sometimes they’ll pop up unexpectedly; those are the best surprises.

  1. This is a favorite of mine, too Kelbel, and I am still wondering what Fantabread is? He was pretty cheeky in that interview. What would Lucas do in his spare time? Antiquing?

    1. I tried to look up the recipe for Fanta bread but I couldn’t find anything! (my kids like to drink it) I kind of picture Lucas doing the model car kit thing, and painting them all with flames.

        1. Richard is too polite to spit something “real” out, even if there was plastic provided for the purpose. no, I imagine it was bread with orange soda poured over it! (I keep saying “soda” so I’m not misunderstood, but normally I’d say “pop”)

          1. yes. and when I say “soda” now, my husband and parents give me an odd look. sometimes I’ll try to throw them off completely and say “fizzy drink”, I can never follow through with the delivery though 🙄

  2. I actually hadn’t listened to this one before, so thanks for blogging it! Wish they showed Strike Back with him in it here in the U.S. instead of that lame one on Starz. I actually saw a big poster for the Starz one on a bus the other day and was so wishing it was Richard’s face on the poster! Very interesting interview. And thanks for the picture of you! Cute glasses! 😀

    1. I’m glad I could introduce you to this interview! the whole “Strike Back” thing causes so many misunderstandings. I actually had an argument with my Dad about them, he was intent on believing the ones that were showing on television were the same ones that I had been talking up so much. finally I made him watch the Richard ones when he came to visit me

        1. he liked them, but we only watched the first two stories (4 episodes) because my mom didn’t want to watch them anymore. which, if you read my other blog, was the basis for us watching the wolf movie that made me “so angry”!

  3. This is great.
(I always assumed the “soy latte” thing was a joke, sort of his idea of a complete wanker’s coffee order.)

    1. (I assumed this because he claims he’s doing sit-ups while he’s being interviewed, and says he’s thinking of eating the fanta bread he’s spat up on the floor)

    2. and now you’ve just offended everyone who drinks Soy Lattes *laughs* I don’t drink coffee, so I have no idea. I do love cake though, so maybe I should befriend Gerard Butler…

      1. No doubt 😀 I have the gift 😉

There’s kind of a hollywood thing about soy lattes, because so many of these trendy diets forgo any dairy products on the totally false basis that milk products will make people gain weight. (I’m sure that’s why Richard was drinking one, if he did. In POTC/LOTR fandom they used to mention that Orlando Bloom used to drink them, which I why I know that they’re a Hollywoody sort of thing.) It’s like that bizarre diet that Hugh Jackman was on where he wasn’t allowed to eat fruit.

It’s one thing to avoid milk products if you have lactose intolerence, but quite another to do it because of some sort of bizarre nutritional theory.
In the meantime, soy milk is actually really bad for you (unlike other soy products, which are fermented and are good for you). There are so many other kinds of milk that can be substituted for cow: rice or almond, for example, also goat’s milk (although you might not want that in coffee. It’s kind of funky).

The reason I assumed that Richard was joking was not only because of the fanta bread, but also because he eats pizza (and I don’t know that Britain is the land of soy cheese pizza) and I think has mentioned eating cheese in the past. I mean, his favourite food was supposed to be chocolate ice cream!

        1. modern day “nutrition” changes so frequently it’s ridiculous! there are those who take it *very* seriously though. I can state that I am not on the “let’s give up wheat and eat like cavemen” train. I feel pretty passionately against that stance, but milk seems to be one of those “iffy” ones. I think milk is healthy, but I also come from a long line of people who suffer from various stomach/digestive ailments, so I can understand the various reasons for avoiding it..

I would assume that Richard approaches his diet a bit differently when he’s trying to buff up for certain roles. so although he may normally enjoy pizza and ice cream, he would avoid those things while in training. there are things that I really love to eat but can’t all of the time, because I will pay consequences for indulging too much, so I only eat them occasionally.

  4. Lovely interview – although I was pissed at Scott Mills for obviously trying to rib RA on his female following. *sighs* Bloody media types just can’t resist the temptation to get RA flustered over that… Thanks for pointing out the more delicious bits. I think I missed those… Oh, and nice to see you smile, btw 🙂 Pretty and sweet!

    Like

    1. at least the interviewer tried to approach the female following thing with some tact, saying we’re lovely and all that. the whole concept just baffles people I think, because they expect that kind of following from Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise, etc. because they’re big name, suave, pretty faces (beauty is in the eye of the beholder) but Richard doesn’t seem to fit that mold, so why do all the woman swoon?

and thanks for the compliment on my up-close-and-personal smile! I always find it fun to see what people look like in real life, because I’m usually way off base!

      1. Not sure how tactful he really intended to be. The question re. the age of RA’s fans was quite obviously aimed at the fact that (at that time) he had a lot of middle-aged followers. And the implication of that is always that that is potentially embarrassing – as opposed to having thousands of teenage fangirls. As if that reflects a higher value/beauty/worthiness of the adored actor. RA handled the question EXTREMELY well – by saying he had two fans (i.e. he was not considered a hunky heartthrob) and they were 25 and 35 (i.e. adult women), which came across as tactful and humourous. (Maybe I am over-sensitive. I have an issue with age, I readily admit.)
On the RL pictures – I agree. It is really nice to put a face to the voice. I always feel much more personally drawn to all those bloggers whom I have either met in RL or who have disclosed what they look like. Because they seem to give more of themselves. At the same time I am one of those anonymous bloggers who never shows a pic – or if she does, it’s hiding behind a camera. Silly.

        1. everyone has different reasons or boundaries. I personally want to connect with people through shared interests, so it’s kind of pointless to hide *shrugs* saying that though, I despise pictures of myself, I loathe them. so knowing that, you can all deduce that I must like you, just a little, to share one with you 😉

          1. Yup, looks can be deceiving. And are not important. It’s what we read and write that we connect to. It’s nice to know, though, that you trust your readers and show yourself 😉 BTW despite being a photographer I abhor being photographed. I loathe my pics, too, except for a select handful. So I fully understand!

  5. I am not a fan of the host at all…never have been and he always seems to be on the radio when I switch it on! However, I love this interview! RA is very good at responding to interviewers in the same manner that they approach the interview. So if they’re cheeky and silly, so is he, but then as an actor maybe that just comes naturally to him. I do get the feeling that in this interview he is being very much himself though. I think he’s naturally cheeky 😉

    1. I’ve not heard this interviewer do anything else, what about the female co-host? I think she saved this interview in so many places. yes, Richard seems to be good at matching the tone of the interview. I’m sure I’d be horrible at that. I hate it when I just can’t seem to get on the same “level” as the person I’m talking to, all my jokes fall flat and I just know I’ve offended them somehow without meaning to!

I still can be on certain days & in certain situations, though now it comes off as aloof or defensive, instead of sweet and cute :/

      3. He’s a BBC Radio1 DJ and one that seems to think that acting really dumb makes you more popular. His co-host is ok here but again, she usually annoys me too although she’s long since left the show. Anyway … I’m probably a harsh critic 😉

  6. Natalie Portman? I’ve not heard that one before. I’ll take the compliment though! that pic is kind of misleading, instead of just doing the smile or the eyes, etc. like some people do online, I picked one that was way too close! 😮 I have freckles, blue eyes and a heart-shaped face, and I’ve never been petite *grumbles* stupid small cute people…just kidding! all of my friends seem to be small cute people

    1. You know the story of how Richard tried to pick up Natalie Portman on the set of Star Wars, and instead was chatting up Keira Knightley? 😀

        1. it just threw me that you said I looked like Natalie, but the thought has stuck with me since you suggested it and I can see where you’re coming from 🙂 I tend to picture myself like I was when I was 21; but I don’t highlight my hair anymore, which means it’s a lot darker than it used to be, and my freckles have faded quite a bit, so…I’ve also been told that I look like Tina Fey, so I’m thinking that what I see in the mirror is not what I really look like!

    1. The first time I traveled to southern Virginia, I thought it was so odd that they called all kinds of pop/soda “coke”. I ordered a Coke(brand name) and they asked what kind…? in other places there is a specific line between the brand names of “Coke” and “Pepsi”; you order a “Coke” and they apologize that they only have Pepsi. I’ve just started saying “cola”

I could tell you where I grew up but I’ve been too straightforward with you guys so far, you need to start working for the answers! 😀

      1. I noticed that Coke thing in Georgia…I thought it had to do with the Coke being produced there, but quickly realized it was more pervasive than that.

It was pop where I grew up too, but only in a small pocket…when I went to college 100 miles to the south, people looked at me like I had horns when I asked for pop 🙂

  8. I found this post through Me and Richard blog. Oh my, THANK YOU for putting the radio interview here. I LOVE listening to RA’s voice, it’s so delish. Funny they mentioned about Gerard Butler, who was my former crush. I’d still like seeing both on film though, but seriously RA’s so much classier in general.

Gerard is a fun guy. I love when he tells the story of wearing a kilt at some kind of function (I forget where he was) where he was sitting up front facing everyone & his mom was motioning to him to close his legs. yes, I love all those Scots!

Richard is my #1 though, with Christian Bale as my 2nd, which is why the whole “Batman” thing is a hard subject for me 😉

I just read your encounter with Gerard and I gasped out loud for you, and then started laughing! not at you, just imagining his face; he must’ve been so shocked! but you followed through and acted like it wasn’t out of the ordinary to just grab his hand, so 😎 and he didn’t run away later on when he signed your picture, so he must not have minded too much! it sounds like you had a wonderful time at the film festival, so you can remember it all fondly now 🙂
