Scotland the Brave

I’ll be headed off to Scotland in a few days.

I’m excited but also a bit nervous too. I’ve never been overseas before. I’ve never even been out of my own country before. Well, that’s not technically true. I did cross over into Canada once, on a school trip. It was very educational. I learned that….well…umm…I learned that I’m very good at stalking–I followed my crush around, unseen, practically the whole time; I learned that I value my sleep–two of my roommates stayed up the whole night singing Biz Markie’s “he’s just a friend” at the top of their lungs. I threw the bedside bible at them. it’s what Jesus would have done too, trust me; and I learned that the walkways around Niagara Falls are very slick on cold April mornings–did I mention that was the one moment my crush chose to notice me? Ugh.

I never thought I’d actually find a use for this!

Everyone I talk to tells me I will have a wonderful time in Scotland, that it will be a trip worth remembering. I’m choosing to believe them. I hope they don’t let me down! I fell in love with Scotland, from afar, a little over 15 years ago. for the history, the scenery, and just the magical of another time quality of the place.

if Margaret tries to follow me back to the hotel with a pity basket, I’ll gladly accept. this trip is expensive!

and in just a few days time I will be there,

for REAL!

Hopefully I’ll have all kinds of fun things to tell you when I come back.

In the meantime:

That man is so wise

  1. Have a great time in Scotland…I am hoping to visit my daughter in N. Ireland next year and take a little side trip to Scotland. Hope you have a grand time. And, being from Canada, I will have to take a closer look at the Mounties from now on, maybe I will see that one that looks just like Richard Armitage. Lol.

  2. Wishing you a brilliant trip to a beautiful part of the British Isles. Any particular place you are heading to? I am just asking because there was a tentative plan for me and hubs to head to the Isle of Skye and visit relatives. Just imagine if we bumped into each other *ggg*. Or if we were in the same place and didn’t 😦 I hope you get to check your e-mail/blog every once in a while. You never know who might try and get in touch with you…
PS: I can behave quite inconspicuously when with non-RA people, so no worries if we were to meet. I’ll keep mum 😀

    1. I’m going to the Isle of Skye over the weekend!!! we’ll be on a 3 day tour but we’re on our own in the evenings… and yes, I will be checking my e-mail. I won’t say I’m not a goof in real life but I can be quite shy sometimes when I’m out of my element.

      1. Shit, which weekend? Next??? That’ll be too early for me, dammit. In any case – I hope the weather holds for you. Keep the mosquito spray handy 😉 – I hear the midgets are mighty in Scotland. (No James McAvoy jokes, please!)

        1. damn! get me all excited w/the possibility of meeting you and then pull the rug right out from under me. you’re lucky you threw in that comment about midgets…I’ve never heard midges referred to in quite that way before. it made me laugh!

          1. LOL – damn, no! You caught me out. I got that midge/t distinction wrong! Non-native speaker :-D.
As for meet-ups – well, we’ll see what happens. I am going to push the hubs a bit. It was his turn to organise something. I bet he hasn’t…

          2. if I do encounter any midges though, I will now be picturing The Lollipop Guild from The Wizard of Oz and LOL-ing when I swat at them

  3. Well, the weather is good according to my wee sister. This will be the first year in the last 40 that I haven’t been ‘home’ for a holiday.
But you’ll love it, if you get a chance go to a place called the Isle of Inchmaholme, on the Lake of Mentieth. The ruined priory has the tomb of a mediaeval knight and his lady, He is laying on his side, facing her, and they are embracing. I’ve never seen anything like it, it’s so…romantic.

  4. I’m going too – but not until September, darn it! 😦 We lived just over 11 miles from Eilean Donan Castle (a 23 minute drive approx) that you show above! If you visit there you should try to also visit Plockton where we used to live many moons ago. Check it out on Google and I think you might be tempted to check it out!! Be sure to keep us up to date as to where you plan to go and when! Have a fantastic time in my “Hame Country” – I was born in Aberdeen, but lived in the Western Highlands for years.

Now you just have to imagine Richard in a kilt. 😉

  5. Excellent! So happy for you. It will be a blast, I’m sure. I, of course, have my Dorothy Dunnett obsession to thank for my love of Scotland. One day I will go there. There’s a “gathering” of Dunnett fans every year in Edinburgh. I hope you have a really smooth journey. Enjoy the new experiences. OK, maybe not haggis. 😀 Hugs!!

    1. I LOVE haggis – but of course I *am* Scottish so maybe that explains it!

Yes – beware of the midges. Nasty wee things! Sometimes there can be clouds of them in places so keep the repellant handy or they can make life miserable! I speak from experience. Can you tell? 🙂

    2. I’ve had haggis already, here in Indianapolis. it was very gamey tasting, which I’m not fond of, but it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. of course they’re not allowed to make it in the traditional way here in the states, with all of the lung meat and whatnot 😛

          1. I enjoy fried food, don’t get me wrong, but the fried snack craze has never caught on with me. I love Snickers bars but I’m not sure I’d want a fried one. it would be hot, and gooey, and what is the batter even made of? no thanks 😯

          2. Here’s a few deep-fried items that a friend told me about. Mars Bars, Bounty Bars, pizza, ice cream, butter *shudders at the thought* and many more that I’ve forgotten, some of them totally crazy. I can assure you none of these were available when I lived there. We just had fish – and chips of course – black pudding (blood sausage), white pudding (a sort of oatmeal, onion and suet sausage) and red pudding. I think the latter was a pork sausage but was in a red coloured skin. All three of them tasted great!

          3. I knew about ice cream and butter but there are SO many more crazy things that are deep fried!! Not just in Scotland!! US State Fairs!! Just imagine it and it’s done!! 😀 😀

    1. I just realized that you’ll be in Scotland during the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Maybe you’ll be able to catch a bit of it.
