6.) Least Favorite Couple

Lucas and Sarah

I’m basing this choice solely on lack of chemistry.

Other couples I may not like because of their storyline or maybe even how the female looks but with Lucas and Sarah, I have a hard time feeling in relation to them as a couple. When I step back and look at the storyline they share objectively, I do feel quite a lot but when I’m witnessing it on screen

it’s just dead.

I should feel something here but I don’t (for Sarah. I have all kinds of feels for Lucas)

I’ve never seen this actress in anything else that I know of, so I’m not judging her overall, just the way she chose to portray this particular character (the dialect coach was asleep on the job as well ). When I used still pictures of this couple to illustrate the song lyrics for Chris Issac’s Wicked Game , I had no problem feeling multiple things;

so it’s not the character, in and of itself, that I have a problem with…

Fun facts: the official video for this song takes place at a Circus and there is a concert version on an album called  From North to South; it all comes back to Richard 😉

A Man Apart

Have you ever noticed how many of Richard’s characters are set apart from society, in some way? Thorin, the displaced king who bares the weight of his people and family’s legacy

John Porter and his botched mission, that made him untouchable in the eyes of his colleagues and loved ones

John Standring, who was never afforded the chance to prove himself as a man, living as the perpetual fumbling boy in his small rural town

and even John Thornton, with the way he set himself apart as he tried to right his father’s wrongs while upholding his family’s standing within the community.

These thoughts seemed to solidify for me recently while browsing through some of my favorite Richard Armitage themed fanvids. There is one in particular, The Evolution of Sir Guy by 19bt80 on YouTube, that I find engaging each and every time I watch.

It starts out with Guy of Gisborne lamenting the loss of Marian and reliving what led up to the catastrophic event. As the music in the video speeds up, various scenes of Guy fighting is shown. Then Lucas North suddenly appears, mimicking similar body movements in his more modern fight scenes. Very creative elements; using the palm punch of series 7 episode 1 that always thrills me was a bonus 🙂

The video continues with scenes of Lucas in quick sequence; the scenes themselves have nothing to do with Guy of Gisborne but subtly draw parallels between the two characters. Even though Lucas and Guy are different, this aptly illustrates how alike they are as well.

After being wowed by that favorite, I was then drawn in by the Guy & Marian (my skin) video by HeathDances.

In this one, Guy of Gisborne is being haunted by Marian’s ghost. Series 3 Guy is burdened with so much guilt because of what he did to Marian, and how ruthless he was before her. I found the use of Marian’s ghost very creative, and also the excerpts from the Robin Hood Witchfinder audiobook that the video was based on.

Richard has said that he likes to show the good in the bad/the bad in the good for his characters. I wonder if he’s drawn to this type of character on a subconscious level, or if he just finds portraying the Man Apart most gratifying? Probably a bit of both; it takes one to know one 😎

Temperance

Restraint, temperance, justice. Constant mindfulness of others and one’s surroundings; practicing self-control, abstention, moderation and deferred gratification. Prudence to judge between actions with regard to appropriate actions at a given time. Proper moderation between self-interest, versus public-interest, and against the rights and needs of others.

Lucas North

Lucas was the quintessential agent, always putting the needs of the many (the job) before the needs of his own. Most people in his situation would have come home from Russia and fought against the system, letting bitterness and regret consume them. Lucas, on the other hand, threw himself into his work because it was the only thing that he had, the only thing he could count on, the only thing that remained real.

Even when he seemed to be slipping on the “delayed gratification” front with Sarah, he wasn’t really; she was part of the job, a contact that he could learn valuable inside information from.

Gluttony

The over-indulgence and over-consumption of food, drink, or wealth items to the point of extravagance or waste. Gluttony can be interpreted as selfishness; essentially placing concern with one’s own interests above the well-being or interests of others.

Percy Courtenay

Percy liked the finer things in life but ended up letting the wealth and fame of his wife, Miss Marie Lloyd Queen of the Music Hall, corrupt and consume him. He used vices like alcohol and the company of other women to try and fill the void that his ego had created by marrying a woman who was more successful than him.

Can we switch these two around?

Can Lucas be the Glutton and Percy be Temperate?

I’m having a hard time plugging Lucas into the role of Glutton, but maybe his downward spiral with Maya could fit: putting his self-interests above the well-being of others; was running really what was best for Maya (clearly not, as we found out) and was pushing aside all that he stood for worth the risk of rebelling against the system?

Can Percy be seen as Temperate: showing restraint, prudence and putting the needs of others above his own? Maybe in the beginning, when he encouraged Marie in her career pursuit. I think even then though he was thinking ahead to the fame “they” would acquire together.

What do you think of my picks for Gluttony and Temperance,

would other Richard Armitage characters fit the descriptions better?

Upsetting For So Many Reasons

Wish I never watched

Answer: Spooks, series 9

If you have a different answer to this one, I’d sure like to hear it 😕 I think it’s pretty universal among Richard Armitage fans that Spooks series 9 was upsetting for so many reasons.

heartbreaking when his voice catches during this scene!

That’s not to say that the whole series is a bust, just those last few. We do get introduced to Demetri and Beth in this series, both enjoyable additions.
