Alphabet Movie challenge: day 8
Hidden Gem
Answer: The Impressionists
I realized that I neglected to write about The Impressionists
in the course of my “fan path”;
a grave error on my part because it is a mini-series that should not be missed! and not just because how unbelievably lovely Richard’s eyes look in this program, either 😉
As I shared in the Proust Questionnaire, Monet was a favorite of mine long before I knew about Richard Armitage. I didn’t know much about the Man vs. the Artist though, so it was very interesting to learn about the more personal side of things.
How he met his wife and started a family with her; how he struggled, along with his artist friends, to fight against preconceived notions of what art should be;
and how he became widowed, slowly fell in love with a woman who had been his benefactor, but was denied acknowledging the relationship for propriety’s sake.
I also enjoyed peeking into the everyday life
of an artist from that time period;
what was
involved
to make his visions
become reality.
The Impressionists made me look a little closer at the paintings I already thought I knew and even changed my mind about some I had previously disliked.
The Impressionists
was a pleasant surprise 🙂
(Non-Armitage answer: The Matchmaker, starring Janeane Garofalo)
I haven’t seen Monet yet. I am a big fan of the Impressionists though. I have seen many of Monet’s original paintings. I am looking forwar to seeing them again with the visual image of RA as Monet!1 😀

oh, you must see it! especially if you are already familiar with Monet’s work. I found the story itself really enjoyable, but it’s also a very pretty movie visually (even aside from RA 😉 )

I have the DVD and have yet to play it from start to finish since I’ve only seen bits of it on Youtube! But I do love Monet’s paintings!
Is Matchmaker the one where she ends up in an Irish town in the middle of a matchmaking festival? I thought that was cute!

Just added Matchmaker to my queue. Thanks for the suggestion. I’m always looking for new (to me) movies.
I have watched “The Impressionists” twice and while I think it was very well done I found it overall a little depressing. That they struggled so in their personal lives I found sad. I knew quite a bit about them because I was an art major in college. I don’t remember any discussion of their personal lives in my art history course. Monet has always been a great favorite of mine.

I hope you like “The Matchmaker”, it’s funny and weird and sweet and just an all around delight 🙂
and while I prefer to leave a movie happy and upbeat, I’m attracted to the more somber dramas, always have been. characters need to work for their happy endings 😉

I just realized why it might have bothered me more. I wasn’t thinking of them as characters but as the actual artists. As an art major I found it so very sad that their greatness was unrecognized for so long. I agree with you that a movie is better if the characters work for their happy endings. Thanks for the discussion.

Need to go back and watch this again. I agree, it was delightful (despite the terrible haircuts and truly ghastly facial hair 😉
Another one that shows how un-menacing Richard’s face can be…
