Fanvid Friday: Lucas and Elizabeta

Lucas and Elizabeta.

Why did the Spooks writers never go anywhere with this? Why?! This lovely fanvid by bccmee is sad but sweet at the same time, and all I have of a storyline that could have gone so many ways and still been so full of heart, no matter the outcome.

We know that Lucas has been thinking of his wife, technically ex-wife though he had no control over that, the whole time he has been gone; only to come back and see that she has moved on without him. The soft regretful looks from Lucas and the distressed but resolute looks from Elizabeta that are so prominently displayed in the clips chosen, do me in each time that I watch.

Pass the tissues please!

The scene of Lucas in her kitchen, feeling ashamed of his prison tattoo and trying to hide it. What must it be like to be removed for eight years and then to come back and see that everyone and everything has gone on without you? The look Elizabeta gives Lucas before someone starts to come through the door and break their moment, is almost like a caress: I don’t know what has happened to you. I want to understand, to ease that burden for you but I can’t. Please understand why I can’t. Lucas welcomes the caress, craves it, and savors if for the few seconds that he’s afforded. To be connected to her again.

The ignored call at the office, the smile of remembrance, and then the scenes of Elizabeta being dragged into the political mess that is Lucas’ life. He needs to let her go, for so many reasons. Their heartfelt parting squeezes my heart; so difficult! Lucas senses her loyalty to him and her longing, but loves her enough to let her go.

Oh Lucas!

*runs away, crying*

    1. and it wouldn’t have had to be easy or end positively either, if they didn’t want it to. since she was involved with the Russian’s b/c of him, there could have been that questionable trust. is she playing him by letting him into her life again, could he trust her with his true thoughts and actions? what is her relationship with her child’s father, is it innocent and happy or is it darker and born out of necessity? would Lucas and Elizabeta have an affair built on lingering love, or would it just be a form of closure that they were never afforded? what would Lucas have to risk or lose in order to protect her if there were genuine feelings there? SO MANY POSSIBILITIES!

      1. Love all your ideas. I agree, instead of Sarah, they had already done a CIA/MI5 romance with Tom Quinn, so why another with Lucas, and could have gone the “questionable trust” even double-agent route with Lucas and Elizabeta instead of the Maya story. I do think in that last scene, when Lucas kisses her on the cheek, and says how he missed her, and she leans against him for a moment, before breaking away, that the two actors at least were signaling a relationship that was still there. Yes, many possibilities wasted.

  1. It’s interesting that you feel she loves him, because people always interpret her emotions towards him as “compassion” (maybe that’s even what the writers said it was) and not any lingering feelings of love. For myself I can see anger against him for disrupting her new life, compassion, regret for what’s losst but not any active love. I interpret the look she gives him after he covers his tattoo as apology for having hurt him. If I were to make a fanvid about Elsvieta and Lucas, from her point of view, it would be to Gotye’s ‘Somebody I used to know” (more for lyrics than music).

Lucas’s feelings are clearly somewhere between love, grief and obsession. I think it’s clear (to me, anyway) that the only thing that kept him going in prison was the thought of getting back to her. It’s never made clear if his captors told him that Elsvieta had moved on with her life.

    1. I forgot to mention guilt as part of the complex emotions that E. feels. I think she is not more brusque with Lucas because of the guilt she feels for having abandoned him.

    2. I see her part in the story as being torn. she’s angry at him for lying to her about who he was and also for forcing her to be involved b/c of her association with him. so there are massive amounts of bitterness there. but because she is now involved I think she can see what an intricate web it all is. I see her as being torn between what used to be and what is, her past love for him and her present love for her family (we don’t know how she feels about her current partner, just that she has a child). as their story evolves over the next few episodes I see her softening, I see that her rigid posture and no-nonsense attitude is a defense mechanism. I feel the pull between them, and not just on his part. there is a holding back, a need to protect what she has now vs a longing that she has kept locked away, covered with anger, that is seeing the light now that he’s back in the flesh. I see these things in her facial expressions.
